History: Kaemon’s father was a very successful merchant and his mother was a happy housewife. His father was often out traveling in order to keep his fortune from dwindling and while he was out he often did a lot of gambling. He lived in a large house in Fukuoka and was taught etiquette and the fine arts; Life was very easy for Kaemon until he was eight years old when his father’s gambling problem caught up with him.
On one of his father’s business trips he decided to go gambling. Unfortunately he lost. In an attempt to make up for the loss he placed a bigger bet. Lady luck was not with him and eventually he lost his fourtune several times over. The people he lost the money to came by to collect and outraged that he could not afford his debt they decided to take it out on his family and possessions. One of the men took his mother and his father into a room and Kaemon heard his mother scream in agony and his father begging to spare her life. Then they grabbed Kaemon’s arm and cut out his left eye. The angry men proceeded to burn down the house and disappeared into the night with his father. As the flames consumed his house Kaemon grabbed his sitar and was left to fend for himself on the streets.
Kaemon survived by playing his sitar and begging people for money. Certainly not an easy life but he remained a kind, caring person none the less. One day when he was playing his sitar a beautiful woman stopped to listen. Her dark hair and eyes were forever burned into his memory. She left before Kaemon could even ask for her name. He vowed that he would one day find her again.
RP Sample: Kaemon’s fingers moved up and down the sitar’s strings in a dance making a sad melody. It was a song he had played a hundred times before ever since he saw that woman. Some people stopped and listened to him play, others dropped a few coins on the ground by his feet, but the vast majority walked by without even looking at him. He had learned to live with the un-caring of the masses because it made him appreciate the kindness of people all the more. His stomach roared like a lion. Kaemon counted the coins at his feet and the coins he had collected from previous days.
“I might have enough to buy a decent meal today,” he thought to himself as he stood up and put his sitar under his arm and walked down the street. Seeing the disappointed looks of the people who had been listening to him he said, “Don’t worry, I’ll be back in a little while.” As he walked he watched the multitude of people of all classes pass him by.
