Glowering darkly at the monks in front of him, Mukei turned on his heels and left the room, disgusted with the lot of them. Him, Jinsei Mukei, to be married to some priestess that dared call herself one? Mukei had had the unfortunate luck to meet that woman, and had since been cursing his karma and past incarnations for whatever they had done.
Stomping up several flights of stairs and pushing a door open roughly, Mukei ignored the scenic view of the top of the monastary, replacing the view seen by his eyes with a lovely view of dense cigarette smoke. Looking up and exhaling at the same time, Mukei pondered the harvest moon above him.
[whisper=koinu]Don't ask. o.o; *ish stuck on Harvest Moon*[/whisper]

"You know, Mukei-kun, cigarettes can kill you."
The soft, rather happy-sounding voice came from right above him. Koinu grinned and then dropped next to him, landing on her feet and smiling at him before holding her arms out. Knowing her as well as he did, Mukei would know that she wasn't asking for a hug. A small, red ball of fur dropped from where Koinu was and landed in her arms. The small red ball of fur was actually a fox. It looked at Koinu, then stuck its nose out to Mukei, causing the shinobi to cover her mouth to hide a giggle. He seemed angry, but the fox was just a kit. It was cute.

Mukei twitched violently has he heard the 'dreaded' voice. Turning with a dark scowl plastered to his face, Mukei sighed heavily. If she was here, who knew who else was? Staring down at the fox kit, Mukei resisted the urge to either pick it up and cuddle it, or pick it up and throw it back at the girls' face.
"Should I die by cigarettes or battle, they would be a blessing; I'd rather die than spend another day on this Buddha-forsaken waste of dirt and life." Mukei grumbled, inhaling deeply and exhaling again, his sun-spun hair glistening like flames in the red moonlight.

Koinu winced as she heard his words. "You're so negative, Mukei-kun," she pointed out. The fox nudged at Mukei again. "Oh... This is Byakko. He's a young kit that I saved from a group of kids. They were mean to him," she stated, petting the kit. "Apparently, he's a shape-shifter, though he hasn't really gotten any sort of shapes down yet. Anyway! Whatcha so grumpy for?" the girl asked, turning her eyes up to him. "And don't look at me like that. I didn't do it."

[Not that I would know, now would I?] Mukei thought to himself, turning his eyes down to the kit before moving the cigarette away and plucking the kit out of the girls' hands and resting it in his free arm. Hearing the small kits' brief history, Mukei made it a point to hunt down those kids and teach them a lesson about animal cruelty. [Shape-shifter, eh? Fun for you, hell for others.]
"I know you didn't do it." Mukei groaned and rolled his head back, his neck exposed to the gentle light of the moon. "Those bast-dunderheads downstairs have decided that, as I'm 'of age', I'm going to marry a whore of a woman who dares to call herself a priestess." Mukei sneered and looked at Koinu. "Tell me, does a woman that cares more for her appearance, status, fame and wealth sound like much of a woman, much less a priestess?"

Koinu giggled whenever he refrained from calling them bastards and settled for a term that always made her giggle. Teehee... Dunderheads. Her thoughts were immediately changed whenever he looked at her. She made a face. She might not be that familiar with humans, but she knew that people who cared more about their appearance, status, fame and wealth than their job - or in this case, to Buddha - wasn't much of a person. She shook her head. She then looked at him, a blank look on her face. "... Marry?" she asked. She wasn't aware that the term to her would be mate, but she had no idea what he meant. Byakko reached up and licked Mukei's cheek.

Mukei patted the kits' head idly, satisfied with Koinu's answer; when he'd first found her, she barely knew the difference between raw and 'DAMMIT! DON'T EAT THAT!'. Contemplating how to explain what 'marry' meant, Mukei thought that it would be better to just put it bluntly, and answer any questions she had after that.
"Mating would be the best way to describe what marriage is. But.." Here, Mukei looked away, momentarily disgusted even further by the human species. "Our 'marriages' are only temporary. It is excruciatingly easy to simply divorce your other or kill them and the children you bore together."

Koinu nodded whenever she understood what he meant. Mating! So, the other priests wanted him to mate with another woman. One that he didnt' want to, and one that was self-obsessed. She could understand him now. Then he said something else that confused her. Divorce. But! He had explained basically what it meant before he said the word. It meant to leave your mate. Koinu watched Byakko as the kit kept trying to lick Mukei's face. "So if you.. were to ma- marry this woman... would you kill her?" she asked. That was the closest thing to divorce with the wolves. If one wolf didn't like his/her mate, then they'd kill their mate.

Mukei sighed and tilted his head downwards, allowing the kit more skin to bathe with his animal breathe and saliva. Thinking about it, thousands of things could be said as his answer, but, as a way to save what little sanity the girl had left, simply gave her as simple of an answer as he could.
"Depends. Do I have to look at it?"

Koinu tilted her head and then giggled. "I suppose you would at one point or another," she stated, leaning back ever so slightly. "Alright... We'll change the subject, I guess." She looked up at the moon and then heard the familiar, and sad sound of wolves howling at the moon. She blinked and Byakko's head whipped around to stare at the moon as well. Taking a deep breath, Koinu closed her eyes and howled back. Byakko yipped a few times and then went back to bathing Mukei's face.

Mukei's eyes sharpened as he felt the note of sadness in the wolves' song. Looking at the moon silently, Mukei tried to feel if there was any death on the winds of the night, but couldn't be too sure.
"What's happened? Are your brethren safe?" Mukei asked silently, wondering if hunters had come or, if worse came to worse, there was a natural disaster on the way, and there was no way to avoid it.

Koinu turned her head to him, forgetting for a moment that he felt these things too. "Hunters are close by," she told him, her eyes close to him. "But they're more worried about something else. I'll have to go check on it later, but there's some sort of big change coming..." Koinu trailed off, turning her head back towards the moon for a moment. She was fighting the urge to revert to her natural self, which was more wolf than human. He would understand, considering that he had known her longest. She sent him another glance. "Any news for me?" she asked, pushing away the wolves for a little bit.

Mukei rolled his shoulders, cracking his neck and the bones in his torse; he had been meaning to tell her there were hunters on the way, usefully provided by the one who would be leading the group (A total asshole who had actually confessed, then not left money in the jar to pay for their services; they were a monastary, not a poor house!) but it seemed the wolves had warned her first.
"Besides the hunters coming, someone wants to give you a job or two, but that can wait until you take care of these assholes, ne?" Mukei guessed sarcastically, a sardonic smile on his face; he knew Koinu would take care of her family first and foremost, then consider the jobs.

Koinu gave him a wolf-like smirk, and her eyes flashed with promise. For this one, she was unleashing her most recent, and cruelest canine compainion. Shuurajou would have fun with this one. She nodded. "Thanks," she told him, cracking her knuckles. "Did you manage to find out what they wanted with my bretheren?" she asked, half tempted to let Shuurajou out now to track them. The blood-thirsty creature could wait though.

"The usual," Mukei snorted, wanting nothing more than to go and kill them himself; this happened far to often, and yet no one had bothered to tell the damned Shogun. He was honestly going to go and tell the damn witch himself within the next week. "They just want the fur and glory of saying 'I killed a wolf!'."
Thinking silently of how he would love to hang the skins of the hunters at the entrance of the mountain, Mukei began to see the advantages of doing so. The anti-monk-but-still-a-monk smirked darkly, transforming from the sun incarnate to the son of the devil in a blink of an eye. "I have a proposition for you, if you wouldn't mind."
